The natural beauty of Dalmatia is known all over the world, as is the purity of its sea and air. A large part of this good reputation can be attributed to the national parks located in Dalmatia - out of the eight national parks in Croatia, six of them are located in Dalmatia! And that's not counting eleven nature parks, six of which are in Dalmatia. 

National The parks we highlight here are: North Velebit National Park, Paklenica National Park, Plitvička jezera National Park, Kornati National Park, Krka National Park and Mljet National Park. Although a separate article could be written about each of them, we would like to refer you to the short selection that we believe deserve special attention.


Krka National Park

NP Krka stretches over 50 km along the Krka and includes its upper and middle reaches. It starts 2 km downstream from Knin and all the way to Skradin and includes the lower course of the Čikola (it includes the estuary and 3.5 km of the canyon). The park enters the area of ​​the surrounding towns of Knin, Drniš, Skradin and Šibenik.

Due to the beauty of the natural environment, interest in real estate in nearby Šibenik, Skradin and other places around Šibenik.

The park includes a total of seven waterfalls that were formed by the deposition of tufa. In some places you will be able to enjoy the busy river flowing through deep canyons, in others you can look at the calm surface of the lake.

Near the park is the historic town of Skradin, which is home to Skradinski buk - one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this area – got his name. It is the largest travertine waterfall in all of Europe with a height of 45.7 m! Most of it is younger than 10,000 years, but near today's watercourse there is travertine as old as 125,000 years!

Reasons for a trip to Krk

The view to Krka is an ideal day trip from Šibenik (20 minutes by car), Zadar (1 hour) and Split (90 minutes). In the summer you will be able to enjoy cooling down, and in other seasons other charms - autumn leaves or flowering plants. Mljet National Park

NP Mljet is located on the western part of one of the most beautiful islands in the Adriatic. The special shape can be attributed to two deep "lakes", that is, deep bays with a narrow exit to the open sea. In addition to natural beauty and an extremely large amount of greenery (it is called the "green island"), you will find a whole range of cultural sights in NP Mljet.

Cultural and historical landmarks on Mljet reveal its entire history. Preserved Illyrian ramparts (fortresses) and mounds (graves) testify to the island's population as early as the 2nd millennium BC. The fact that the Romans inhabited this island is evidenced by numerous remains scattered around it.

Kornati National Park

group of islands in the entire Mediterranean. And all this on an area of ​​only 69 km2. The islands are mostly uninhabited, and the most populated is also the largest island in this series - Kornati - with a total of just over 20 inhabitants. The islands are mostly inhabited or cultivated by the inhabitants of nearby Murter.

How to get to Kornati?

In order to get to Kornati, you must first get to Murter. It's easiest by bus. Direct lines run from Zagreb and Biograd na Moru.

You can arrive by car on the main road or the A1 highway (Zagreb - Split). Exit in Pirovac and continue along roads D59 and D121 towards Murter. From Murter, you catch a boat.

Paklenica National Park

Located on the southern part of Velebit, the largest mountain in Croatia, it is not surprising that the most famous attractions of this national park and some of the highest peaks of this mountain. The Paklenica National Park includes the Velika and Mala Paklenica gorges, several caves and a multitude of plant and animal species found at every turn.

The very fact that NP Paklenica is located on Velebit speaks of its popularity among mountaineers and alpinists. This park includes the most popular mountaineering destination in Croatia - the steep Anića kuk.

If climbing is not your thing, don't worry. Paklenica National Park is dotted with kilometers of marked hiking trails (estimated between 150 and 200 km!) and includes a mountain lodge and the Lugarnica mountain house. All paths are marked and marked with boards so you know which peak you are heading towards.
